    AIAP’s May 2025 Hike

    Mount San Jacinto Saturday May 17, 2025

    Join us for AIAP’s May group hike at the stunning Mount San Jacinto! Please note that this month’s hike will take place on Saturday to allow for travel times.


    Meeting Time & Location:

    8:30 AM at the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway Station

    Carpooling: To make it more fun, those who want to drive on Saturday morning, should meet at North County Westfield Mall in front of Macy’s at 5:45 AM and start driving at 6 AM promptly.

    Hike Details:

    • Total distance: 10 miles round-trip from the top of the tram

    • Elevation gain: Approximately 2,400 feet

    • Difficulty: Strenuous – expect a challenging 5-mile ascent at high altitude

    • Weather: Temperatures may range from cool to cold; please check the forecast the night before and dress in layers.

    Important Reminders:

    • Registration is required - participants must register for the event through the AIAP website; registration is free but required.

    • Physical preparation is essential participants must be in good condition due to altitude and elevation gain.

    • Water & Snacks: Bring at least 2 liters of water, snacks, and a shareable breakfast item.

    • Footwear: Comfortable, supportive hiking shoes are required.

    Permits & Waiver:

    • A hiking permit is required and can be obtained at the tram station. All participants must have a permit to join the hike.

    • To complete the registration process, all participants must confirm the AIAP Hike Participation Waiver

    • Tram ticket is $35. Group rate is $30 (RSVP by May 15 to receive the discount)

    Note: AIAP does not assume any responsibility for the safety and security of hikers, and shall not be held liable for any accident, injury, loss of property or damages as a result of joining the hiking event set up by AIAP. All hikers join the hiking events at their free will and assume all the accidental dangers of a hiking event, and shall not hold AIAP liable for any bodily, financial, or property damages.

    Topic: Survivors of Torture, International


    Short Presentation: 

    Survivors of Torture, International (SURVIVORS) in San Diego is dedicated to facilitating the healing of torture survivors and their families, empowering them to rebuild their lives with dignity and resilience. Through comprehensive services, including medical, psychological, and social support, SURVIVORS addresses the profound impacts of torture. The organization also works to educate professionals and the public about the realities and consequences of torture, fostering greater awareness and understanding. Additionally, SURVIVORS advocates tirelessly for the rights of survivors and the global abolition of torture, striving to create a world free from such inhumanity. Their mission is rooted in compassion, justice, and a commitment to restoring hope for those affected by torture.


    About Presenters:

    Etleva Bejko, Executive Director, is a seasoned immigration services leader with over 20 years of experience in the field. Throughout her career, she has responded to humanitarian crises, rallied community groups, and built programs and teams that have served generations of refugees and immigrants throughout the San Diego County. 


    Mahvash joined Survivors of Torture, International in May 2011 to oversee the holistic, strength-based, recovery-oriented service program. She leads all ongoing development, expansion, and enhancement of client service programs and provides agency leadership with other members of SURVIVORS’ management team. She received her Ph.D. in psychology from Alliant International University and obtained her license as a psychologist in July 2004 including her domestic violence certificate. Mahvash is bilingual and speaks Farsi (Persian).

    Topic: California Rooftop Solar. New Challenges as well as new Opportunities.


    Main Presentation: 

    Recent changes in the Net Energy Metering (NEM-3.0) by the California Public Utilities Commission, CPUC,  have created challenges as well as new opportunities in the adoption and implementation of rooftop solar in the State of California. Home energy storage/batteries have now become an integral part of going solar in California. We will review and discuss some of these new challenges facing rooftop solar and the feasibility of going solar in 2025. 


    About Presenter:

    Bahram Shadzi has a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering & Material Science from the University of Minnesota. Prior to embarking on renewable solar energy, he spent many years in leadership roles in the process development and engineering of computer disks, semiconductors and flat panel display. He was also a leader in the development of various chemical processes to treat and eliminate hazardous wastes from high tech electronics manufacturing. He is the author of four U.S. patents.
