The Eco-poetics of Sohrab Sepehri
الهیات شاعرانه سهراب سپهری: اگاهی اب و قانون گیاه
Sohrab Sepehri is the best-selling contemporary Iranian poet. He is often referred to as a modern poet/painter. At the same time he is deeply rooted in Iranian contemplative tradition, influenced by Rumi, and Khayyam; as well as eastern traditions, such as Zen, Advaita Vedanta, and Taoism. His Hasht Ketab, particularly, “seday-e pa-ye ab”; and “hajme sabz”; is a lyrical ecocriticism, avant la lettre. Dr. Davary will highlight Sepehri’s social awareness and poetic responsibility through reflecting on his mindfulness of nature, and his attention to the maintenance of harmonious relationships.
About the speaker: Dr. Bahar Davary is associate professor in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of San Diego. Her Ph.D. in Catholic Theological Tradition from the Catholic University of America began with the study of classical Greek and Hebrew, as well as Sanskrit. In 2004 she was a Full bright scholar in Indonesia and Malaysia. Her book Women in the Qur'an: A Study in Islamic Hermeneutics was published in 2009. She has several articles in academic journals and has had media appearances in Vatican Radio, San Diego KPBS, and BBC Persian programs such as Pargar and Shirazeh.
