Main Presentation: Iranian Winter of Discontent and Economic Challenges Ahead

Speaker: Prof. Hashem PesaranJohn Elliot Distinguished Chair in Economics at USC

Summary: Recent demonstrations in many cities and hamlets in Iran have once again highlighted the urgency of economic reforms and the need for Iran’s economic integration with the rest of the global economy. In this talk, Dr. Pesaran will consider some of the economic data on income and expenditure disparities between small and large cities in Iran and discuss possible causes of the recent economic unrests. He then will provide an overview of economic challenges facing the government and the private sector in Iran.

About the Speaker:

Dr. M. Hashem Pesaran is the John Elliot Distinguished Chair in Economics at the University of Southern California, Emeritus Professor of Economics at the University of Cambridge, and a Fellow of Trinity College. He also holds the directorship of USC Dornsife Institute for New Economic Thinking, and the Center for Applied Financial Economics at USC. Previously, he was head of the Economic Research Department of the Central Bank of Iran and the Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Iran. He was awarded Honorary Doctorates by the University of Salford (1993), the University of Goethe, Frankfurt (2008), Maastricht University (2013), and University of Economics in Prague (2016). He is the recipient of the 1992 Royal Economic Society Prize. He is the founding editor of the Journal of Applied Econometrics (1986-2014), and a co-developer of Microfit, an econometric software package published by Oxford University Press. He was named one of "The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds" by Thomson Reuters in 2014 and 2015. He has over 200 publications published in leading scientific journals and edited volumes in the areas of econometrics, empirical finance and macroeconomics and the Iranian economy. He most recently published Time Series and Panel Data Econometrics (Oxford University Press, 2015). He is an expert in the economics of oil and the middle-east and his research has been cited almost 66K times according to Google Scholar. Farid Afshari Shahed Mohseni Zonoozi

Farid Afshari has over 15 years of experience teaching piano and keyboard and has had many years of experience in teaching piano at PTC Music School and the Arasbaran Art Institute and Green Music. He's received a Certificate from Oxford University and Music Degree from Tehran University and is a member of the Music Teachers Association and National Guild of Piano Teachers. Farid's approach to teaching is to have the student work at their own pace while developing proper technique and good practice and performance habits.

Shahed Mohseni Zonoozi is a world music maestro, composer, music producer, sound engineer, videographer, inventor and entrepreneur (with five patents), featured in Music Connection Magazine and received several music awards from Global Music Awards, International Songwriting Competition, Academia Music Awards and some others. Shahed discovered his passion of music at very early ages. He was eight years old when he started learning music and playing Santoor (Iranian Traditional Instrument) and immediately showed a specific fondness and talents for music composition, audio recording and being creative as he recorded five patents and several prizes of invention and innovation related festivals up to age of 18. He graduated from Southern Cross University of Australia in Computer Engineering and completed two master degrees in Information Systems and Visual Arts at Eastern Mediterranean University in Cyprus. While studying in a multicultural environment in Cyprus, he observed artistically talented people from different cultures. That inspired him to create a media program -designed in an artistic form- to accommodate diverse skills and talents. The result was InterContinental Concerts organization which is a multimedia production organization that produces music, live concerts and performance videos. InterContinental Concerts values diversity and promotes unity among all people on earth with the primary goal of bring together artists from around the world to participate in various productions and projects. Up till 2017, Shahed worked with 145 artists and crew from over 45 nationalities in different projects also produced award wining music tracks. Currently Shahed is working on entrepreneurial projects in Business and Music and mentoring enthusiastic and motivated individuals.
