AIAP April Hike will be at
Iron Mountain-Poway on April 18, 2010. The mountain core is
composed of batholithic, granodiorite rock. Some of the boulders
are reddish from iron deposits and possibly from the
formerly-overlying red Bedford Canyon formation. Soils on the
mountain include decomposed granodiorites and iron rich soils
derived from iron deposits in the fractures. Curiously enough,
Iron Mountain contains some of the same endemic plants that are
found on gabbro soils.
This is a moderately intense
day hike. The trails are well marked and maintained. The
views from the peak are well worth the effort. This hike is
about 6 miles round trip and
is likely to take about 3.5 hours. Please bring water and hiking
boots. For any questions
